Essay Proposal: Andrea Zittel in realation to de Certeau and Foucault

  1. I like your choice of Zittel and carpet furniture, and your framing of it in terms of what she's said about the freedom of self imposed restraints is potentially productive. But in your proposal you haven't yet pushed these connections far enough to formulate strong critical questions. More time needs to be spent grappling with specific features of Carpet Furniture, using close reading to be more rigorous in your inquiry and more precise in your language. This would also be helped a great deal by using focused, well-defined concepts from de Certeau and Foucault to better define and elaborate your questions. Consider for instance engaging de Certeau's concept of marking and transgressing boundaries and how you might use this to understand the liberation Zittel suggests. Think too about what details you'll have to work with dealing with carpet furniture, and whether you have enough to sustain five pages of analysis. If not, consider adding another project of Zittel's that is sufficiently rich with details for you to truly develop strong, engaged, critically grounded inquiry and analysis.

  2. maybe you can use some of her other works as well or her personal thoughts from interviews, etc. I think the carpet furniture is only a fraction of what her work stands for in terms of limitation, etc
